Ann hit the national headlines in 1989 when her first historical novels, Louisa Elliott and the sequel, Liam’s Story sold in the USA for what was then a record sum for a first-time author. Published by Chatto & Windus, and Pan in the UK, Louisa Elliott was translated into seven languages and shortlisted for the prestigious RNA award in 1990. Revised editions of both novels are now available in print and ebook format.
Moon Rising, set in 19thC Whitby, is now an ebook, while Ann’s fifth novel, The Master’s Tale, based on the life of Captain EJ Smith of the Titanic, is available in both formats. Originally published by The Thorn Press, this novel received one of the Rubery Awards for independently published fiction in 2012. Ann’s most recent novel, One Night, Two Lives, published in 2019, tells the story of Suzie and James, and how one fateful evening in the 1960s shaped both their lives.
Ann’s memoir, Housewife Writes Bestseller – a Tale of Life & Luck, focuses on her life during the 1980s, when her sea-captain husband was away on long voyages, and she began researching and writing the two Elliott novels. Coincidences and strange events went on for almost ten years, only to (almost) cease once Liam’s Story was published in 1991.
Born in York, Ann is a member of both the Society of Authors, and The Alliance of Independent Authors. She now lives in Southampton with her semi-retired husband, Peter.
